For more than half a century, Plasser Australia has been the quiet powerhouse keeping the nation’s rail lines safe, reliable and cost-effective. From its home in North St Marys—at the heart of Western Sydney’s growth corridor—the company boasts a 140-strong workforce and a nationwide network of highly skilled teams. Many of those employees are second-generation employees, a testament to Plasser’s enduring family-style culture.
“Spend ten years here and you’re still considered the newbie,” jokes Production Manager Jose Ojeda, summing up the loyalty that has underpinned Plasser’s stability and success.
That commitment to people is matched by an uncompromising focus on quality. Track maintenance machines, built decades ago at Plasser’s facility, are still clocking up miles today, proof of manufacturing standards that stretch product lifecycles and maximise value for customers.
Yet even a 55-year success story feels the pressure of cyclical demand and Australia’s rising manufacturing costs. To navigate those challenges, Plasser recently teamed up with ICN Western Sydney consultant Raquel Bloom. Introduced at a local networking event, Bloom has opened doors to industry programs, manufacturing alliances and government contacts designed to bolster local suppliers.
“ICN’s connections have taken the complexity out of finding reliable partners,” says Ojeda. “Raquel has also helped us brief government stakeholders on how Plasser’s work—and the broader supply chain we support—adds economic value at a local level.”
That broader impact matters. Beyond the 140 employees on the payroll, Plasser sustains a host of Australian suppliers that helps project owners meet state-based local-content requirements and Australian Industry Participation plans.
“We’re constantly battling the perception that Australian-made costs more,” Ojeda admits, “but the best outcomes for Australia’s rail network are delivered right here, by Australian manufacturers who understand local conditions.”
